Dr. Robert Zupnik is recognized for his expertise as clinical practitioner, and for his contributions to academia in the study of periodontics. He holds degrees from Georgetown University and the University of Pennsylvania. He has perfected his diagnostic and surgical expertise over the last 48 years, and he continues to update his skills with the current advances of treatment in his field.
Dr. Zupnik received D.D.S. degree from Georgetown University Dental School, where he graduated in the top five of his class with numerous honors and awards. He then served in the U.S. Navy Dental Corps as a full lieutenant stationed with the Marines at Camp Lejeune, NC. He deployed with the 8th Marines to the Mediterranean Sea aboard the U.S.S. Lorraine County as the fleet Marine dentist. After the completion of active duty, he went into an association with a crown bridge specialist in Washington, D.C.
In 1961, Dr. Zupnik left private practice to enter the graduate program of periodontics at the University of Pennsylvania and Boston University dental schools, headed by the renowned doctors, Henry Goldman, Walter Cohen and Morton Amsterdam. He received his graduate Periodontal certificate and Masters Degree from these universities.
In 1963, Dr. Zupnik opened his own private Periodontal practice in Bethesda, MD which has evolved into Zupnik, Chen & Zupnik D.D.S., P.A. (zwcperio.com.)
In 1964, he was a clinical assistant professor at the University of Pennsylvania graduate school of Periodontics, then in 1965 became a clinical assistant professor at the University Of Maryland Dental School in the Department of Periodontics.
Dr. Zupnik received Board Certification from the American Academy of Periodontology in 1967. He then had the honor of establishing the Graduate Program of Periodontics at the University of Maryland Dental School. He currently holds the title of Clinical Professor in the Department of Periodontics at the University of Maryland Dental School.
Dr. Robert Zupnik is a Certified Dental Laser Specialist (LANAP), using the FDA approved Millenium PerioLase laser.
He founded and presides over the ZCY Study Club since 1997, and is included in the Washingtonian Magazine’s list of Top Periodontists.
In his leisure time, Dr. Zupnik is an equestrian, and is currently in Dressage training with his young horse “Babe." He also takes weekly trail rides at Sugar Loaf Mountain with his western quarter horse “Jackson,” and goes to the gym 5 days/week.
