Dental implants have quickly become one of the most common options for replacing a single missing tooth. Here are a few of the good reasons why:
• Dental implants look, feel and function like a natural tooth. • Implants offer a better aesthetic outcome. • Dental implants do not decay. • There is no need to grind down adjacent natural teeth to place an implant. • Implants integrate with and preserve the jaw bone. • Like natural teeth, implants are easier to clean than a tooth supported bridge or crown.
Here's how it works:
The titanium implant is surgically placed into the jawbone to function as a root.
Over a period of 3-6 months, the implant integrates with the surrounding bone, forming a solid foundation. (During this period, a temporary tooth can be worn over the implant site.)
Next, a small metal post - called an abutment - is screwed into the implant to act as an anchor for your new tooth.
Finally, the crown is placed over the abutment and your smile is restored.
